TiVo AND THE PERSONAL TELEVISION INDUSTRY Mike Ramsay and JimBarton founded TiVo Inc. in 1997 in Alviso, California, and with it, pioneered the concept of Digital Video Recorders. In the initial years, TiVo was funded by venture capitalists Stewart Alsop of New Enterprise Associates and Geoff Yang of Redpoint Ventures. The company was founded with a vision "to create and continually enhance a new, easy – and much better – way to watch television"...

COMPETITION TAKES SHAPE The Personal Video Recorder industry or the interactive television industry took shape in the fall of 1998 when TiVo began testing its product in New Jersey and San Francisco. Initially, the industry had only two players – TiVo and ReplayTV. The beginnings of the two competitors, TiVo and ReplayTV were different. TiVo was able to raise nearly $88 million from its IPO, unlike ReplayTV which was not able to generate much by way of IPO...

CONCLUSION But the brighter prospects for TiVo came in the form of patent awards. In May 2001, TiVo was awarded patents formany of the fundamental aspects of the technology that differentiated PVRs and VCRs.
